Bay Bay’s Chicken and Waffles

Bay Bay’s Fried Chicken over a Lemon Cake Waffle…. so delicious!

Tonight’s adventure in dining truly falls into the ‪#‎LocalFinds‬ department. I have driven by Bay Bays Chicken & Waffles for 3 years. A small, non-descript building right alongside of Okeechobee Blvd just west of Congress Ave. My first choice of restaurant was closed for the evening at 8:30, so I decided to head over and try this place I’ve been driving by.
Pulling in, the small sign next to the driveway says “Best Fried Chicken in Florida”. OK, so who awards that, I thought. And is there much competition?
After creating a parking space in the very small parking lot, I’m greeted by booths and picnic tables outside. Walking inside, I’m not yet sure if it’s an order-at-the-counter or a menu kind of place. A friendly employee looks up at us and asks “First time here?” We nod, and he invites us to take a seat anywhere we’d like and he’ll be right with us. We grab a table outside, and a minute later James shows up with a small container in his hand. “Welcome to Bay Bay’s”, he says. “Home of the best fried chicken in Florida. We want you to try our chicken before you buy it, so here’s a sample for you to try.” He sets down small basked with enough chicken for the 3 of us to each have a substantial taste. Let me say, that I am in general NOT a fried chicken lover. But this chicken…. well…. I can now CLEARLY understand where the title came from. Hot, crispy, a little sweet, more than a little spicy… oh my! Really, really, good.
James now goes on to detail how each of the signature dishes each come with their own belgian-style buttermilk waffle, but of course you can also upgrade to other waffles…. Lemon cake waffle, corn bread waffle, pumpkin pie waffle, and others I’m not remembering.
The three at our table all ended up ordering chicken, but each with a different waffle. There was an original buttermilk, a cornbread, and a lemon cake waffle. They were all delicious, and I’m not sure I could pick a favorite. I will have to sample them again!
The chicken was delivered hot and crispy, and James checked on us frequently. The service was great, and the food was even better. This place is really one of those “hole in the wall” finds. It’s obvious the outside has never pulled me in before, but curiosity sure did. And my tastebuds are still thanking me!
